Citizens in chase drama

2011-01-21 00:00

AN attempted hijacking on Tuesday ended with the would-be hijacker apparently committing suicide while trying to flee.

The drama happened in the Port Edward industrial area at around 6.30 pm. A 36-year-old woman was accosted by Sakhumuzi Nhlokolo as she opened her car and was about to get inside. Nhlokolo grabbed her car keys and shoved her aside.

While he was struggling to get the car to start she screamed for help.

She stopped a car driven by a security guard from GP Security, who came to her assistance. Nhlokolo, noticing the security guard, jumped out of the car and ran away. The security guards and a few members of the public then chased after Nhlokolo, who fired two shots at them with a 9 mm pistol. The security guard fired back, hitting Nhlokolo in the thigh.

The suspect then took refuge in nearby bush. The security guard, together with the people who were helping him, then waited for the would-be hijacker to emerge from the bush. Nhlokolo did not come out; instead they heard a gunshot and found Nhlokolo lying dead with a bullet wound to the head. The position of the wound seemed to indicate he had shot himself. While suicide is suspected, Margate police spokesperson Pumzile Makaula said the cause of death will have to confirmed at the post-mortem investigation.
