City abuzz as swimming stars compete in local pool

2012-08-15 00:00

PRINCESS Charlene of Monaco has made a contribution towards a swimming pool dome at the G.C Jolliffe pool in Pietermaritzburg.

The dome was put up yesterday in preparation for the South African Short Course Swimming Championships, which start tomorrow and will end on Sunday.

The town will be buzzing as Olympic medallists Chad le Clos, who won two medals, and Cameron van der Burgh, who broke the men’s 100 metres breaststroke world record, are expected to attend.

The event is a qualifying tournament for the World Short Course Championships taking place in December. In 2010, Van der Burgh broke world records at the same tournament.

Kerrie Muldoon, SA Short Course Swimming Championships spokesperson confirmed that all the Olympic swimmers would be at the event.

World 50 metres freestyle record holder Roland Schoeman will also be competing.

The heats will start at 9.30 am daily, with the finals from 4 pm.

The entry is R10 for spectators, with tickets sold at the swimmingpool on the corner of Victoria and Pine Streets.
