City business goes up in flames

2013-08-05 00:00

EYEWITNESSES watched helplessly on Saturday night as a fire destroyed the Bed Shop in the central business district.

The fire started at about 7.15 pm and the flames soon spread, destroying everything in the store on the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli Street and Victoria Road.

Lindokuhle Madlala, who was standing at a robot near the shop, told The Witness he had noticed sparks on the roof.

Barbara Mfeka, an attendant at the petrol station over the road, said she was helping a customer when she noticed flames inside the shop.

“I was shocked. There was already a police van and a private car parked next to the shop and people were on their phones.

“I was scared about what would happen to us if the fire spread across.”

Sbonelo Shelembe, a security guard, was some distance away when he saw the flames. By the time he arrived at the store, the flames had destroyed everything.

A fireman at the scene, who asked not to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said there was nothing they could do as the flames had spread throughout the store.

“There was nothing to save in this shop.”

Msunduzi fire department investigator Roni Gwamanda said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

The owner of the store could not be reached for comment yesterday.
