City councillors get their lounge back

2010-12-20 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality has decided to terminate its rental contract of the Compen Building in an effort to boost its depleted coffers.

Acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko said the termination is part of the municipality’s revenue enhancement drive.

He said the cancellation of the contract will save the city about R1,94 million in rent per year.

The Witness reported recently that councillors protested after hearing that staff working in the Compen Building were to be moved to the councillors’ premises at the city hall.

At the time, councillors questioned why administrative staff were being moved to the crowded city hall when there are plenty of vacant offices at other municipal buildings, such as the Professor Nyembezi Centre and A.S. Chetty Building.

Maseko apologised, saying it was not management’s intention to undermine councillors and the move was just a temporary one.

“The councillors’ lounge is now available and ready to be used by councillors.

“The work stations will be equipped with computers and printers, which will be included in the adjustment budget”

Maseko added: “I confirm that all municipal buildings are [now] currently occupied, including the seventh floor at the Professor Nyembezi Building [which was previously vacant].” — Witness Reporter.
