City defends R10K KFC purchase

2014-03-19 00:00

THE eThekwini Municipality spent over R10 000 on KFC at the Nelson Mandela Memorial Service hosted at Moses Mabhida Stadium last year.

In total the city spent R5 million in the week that followed the death of Nelson Mandela on December 5, 2013, according to an agenda tabled before the executive council yesterday.

But the city mayor James Nxumalo said the city should be proud of keeping its costs significantly lower than other South African metros.

Other costs incurred during the week-long mourning period included R1 million spent on transport to the official memorial service at FNB Stadium in Soweto and the public viewing in Pretoria.

The cost included the supply of sound systems, payment of artists, security, decorations and street pole banners.

City official Dr Musa Gumede said many of the costs could not be avoided and the purchase of R10 195 worth of KFC was for the multitude of marshals who assisted with the memorial and had been on their feet for most of the day and late into the evening.

However, DA councillor Heinz de Boer questioned why the city had bused 103 people to the official memorial yet the DA council members were not invited.

Nxumalo apologised for not “informing” all councillors.
