City official ordered fake 'sexy' calendar

2007-12-06 00:00

THE fake 2008 calendars of a sexy female model that have caused much uproar at the Msunduzi Municipality were purchased by an authorised official of the municipality.

This was confirmed by Swan Publishing, which produced the calendar.

Yani Joannides, managing director of Associated Industries, declined to divulge the identity of the official who purchased the calendars, on the grounds of confidentiality.

Msunduzi municipal manager Rob Haswell confirmed that the individual who purchased the calendar is a municipal employee, but could not give further details as he said the matter is subject to a disciplinary hearing.

This will take place tomorrow and details of how many copies were printed and whether the individual used taxpayers’ money to purchase the calendars will be ascertained.

Haswell said that although he did not feel it necessary to spell it out to employees, municipal staff will not be allowed to put the fake calendars up on walls at council premises as the calendar denigrates women.

“If you look at our official 2008 calendar branded with the municipality’s official logo, you will see that it has a picture of three leading women in the city; the mayor, president of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business and an SAPS director,” he said.
