City sets financial goals

2008-01-16 00:00

CITY Manager Rob Haswell says that the municipality has to make many improvements this year if it is to set itself apart as the city of choice. As chief accounting officer, Haswell said that the first priority is the city’s financial position.

Last year the municipality received a qualified 2005/06 audit, which reflected poorly on the city’s finances, with the auditor-general declaring the audit report the worst among high capacity municipalities in the province.

The poor report was partly due to the municipality struggling with converting to the new municipal accounting system. The auditor-general was also not satisfied that there had been compliance with legislation when bonuses were paid out to senior managers.

“We need to ensure the full expenditure of council and grant funded capital expenditure this year on both maintenance and development programmes to provide more efficient and equitable service delivery throughout our 649-km municipal area.

“In short, if we all focus and pull together on delivery and development, then 2008 could well be an improved, if not bumper year for us all,” said an optimistic Haswell.
