City soccer star jets off to Greece

2008-07-30 00:00

Pietermaritzburg-born Bafana Bafana and former Ajax Cape Town player Bryce Moon jetted off to his new club, Panathinaikos FC in Greece, yesterday.

Moon (22), who spent four seasons at Ajax after joining them from Ireland’s Corelaine FC, agreed to a four-year contract to join the Greek giants at a fee of R10 million.

He told The Witness at his Woodlands home that the move is an opportunity for personal growth and that he is on track to achieving his goals in life. He said Ajax are sad to lose him, but that they understand that he has to grow as a player.

Panathinaikos saw Moon’s talents during the African Cup of Nations tournament earlier this year. Other European teams such as Manchester United, Porto and Blackburn also showed an interest in signing Moon.

“I am an easily coachable player, physically strong and fast. It will not be hard for me to adapt at Panathinaikos,” said Moon.

His father, Patrick Moon, who is an Msunduzi Municipality councillor, said he is very happy to see his son’s career progressing.

“Bryce has leadership qualities, works hard and I am proud of him.”
