City sub-station blows up

2011-12-01 00:00

AN explosion at the Promed Road electricity sub-station left Willowton, Mountain Rise and parts of Woodlands in the dark last night and The Witness a tad later than normal this morning.

A senior official with Msun-duzi Fire Rescue, Nkosinathi Mch unu, said it is not known what caused the explosion.

He said an investigation is to be carried out.

An official with the Msunduzi fire department, who declined to be named because he is not authorised to comment, said the damaged sub-station affected 14 other sub-stations in various parts of the three areas.

“At this stage we need to wait for the sub-station to cool down as the heat has melted most of what is inside.

“The transformer has oil … Water and electricity do not mix.

“What we will do once everything has cooled down is to try and restore power in the Willowton area and then Mountain Rise.

“Unfortunately there’s a possibility that people in the Woodlands node might be without power until tomorrow [Thursday] morning,” said the official.

He said fixing the 11 000 volt sub-station could cost a million rand or even more given that most of its interior is melted.

“It’s going to be labour and time to strip the damaged parts when everything cools down.

“Hopefully there will be spare parts available and if not it will take more time to order these,” said the official.
