City’s residents sign their support for Bafana

2010-02-24 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG residents joined the “Unite Mzansi Unite” campaign, signing a giant Bafana Bafana jersey at the Market Square yesterday.

The signing of the jersey is part of an Adidas campaign aimed at uniting South Africans behind the 2010 Fifa World Cup and Bafana Bafana.

Residents gathered in large numbers to show support for the national team, joining a long queue to sign the jersey.

The campaign kicked off in Kokstad recently and made its way to Durban before reaching the City of Choice.

No politicians were seen at the signing in Market Square. Most councillors of the Msunduzi Municipality were attending the official opening of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, held at the Royal Showgrounds yesterday.

Some residents were thrilled at the opportunity. Simon Mnyamana (72) said he was happy to have pledged his support for the national team.

Mnyamana added that he will be among the thousands of South Africans attending World Cup matches.

Zethembiso Mfeka (20), said that she had to put her signature on the jersey as she is proudly South African and behind Bafana Bafana.

Other residents participated in five-a-side soccer matches.

Employees at nearby fast food outlets and supermarkets stole a few minutes from their shifts to pledge their support.
