City’s top three managers off sick

2009-12-11 00:00

AT least three senior members of the Msunduzi Municipality were in poor health yesterday.

At the start of Exco’s meeting, councillors were told that the deputy mayor, who had suffered chest pains, had gone to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban for tests. The municipal manager, Rob Haswell, was indisposed because of ill-health and the chief financial officer, Roy Bridgemohan, was absent because he had a wisdom tooth removed. The mayor remarked “Hayibo!”, to which Bill Lambert replied, “I think he would need all the wisdom he can get.”

Later, the discussion turned to Exco’s extended wait for reports. Lambert said Exco was still waiting to hear about the amount of leave taken by senior officials. Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo, commenting on the frequent occurrence of stress leave being taken, said, “People seem to be getting stressed, except the mayor who is never stressed. In the past nine years I have never taken stress leave.

“Perhaps I should offer a stress management course. Stress is also an indication that people are not coping with the job. It’s a case of ‘If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen and leave it for others who can,” she said.
