Clarendon businessman reports manhole covers stolen

2009-11-20 00:00

IN the wake of the arrest of two men alleged to have stolen manhole covers belonging to the municipality across the city, a businessman discovered that his manhole covers were missing in his yard in Clarendon.

Dave Short, owner of Dave Short Properties in Roberts Road, said three covers were stolen from his business recently.

“I discovered on Wednesday afternoon that all three manholes covers at the back of the building were missing. When I read about the arrests and the recovery in Thursday’s newspaper, I thought maybe my manhole covers are among those that were found.”

Short reported the matter to the police and wanted to identify his manhole covers. However, it seems the covers have been returned to the municipality.

He said it will cost him about R1 000 to replace all three covers.

Meanwhile, Derrick Osborne, who alerted the police to the theft of manhole covers, told The Witness that 51 covers were found at 103 Roberts Road.

“I was with my friend … and we found 11 manhole covers hidden in the bushes and we called the police. The police found another 40 on the side of the house later that day.”
