Clash of hockey’s top schoolboys

2013-05-25 00:00

ALL the top schoolboy hockey sides, except Kearsney, who are on half-term leave, have matches this weekend.

This includes the two top matches between four of the five top teams in KZN, the results of which will help determine the rankings in the province.

Northwood, a team that have lost just one of their 15 matches, will play against Westville. Northwood have drawn two matches recently and this will give Westville, who have won their last four games, some encouragement.

Schools that they have both played include Noordheuwel, Potch BHS and Paul Roos all early in the season. Northwood won comprehensively in all three while Westville beat Noordheuwel but lost to the other two. More recently, both have played Rondebosch and Pretoria BHS where Northwood drew both games. Westville’s improvement over the season has been good and they beat PBHS and lost by a goal against Rondebosch. Today’s game will likely be tight and Northwood must not be complacent if they wish to win.

The second match that is going to be close is on Papes at Maritzburg College where Glenwood are the visitors. It is also the College Old Boys Reunion weekend, which will ensure a good deal of support for the home side. This local support could prove vital in a match where there is not much to distinguish between the two teams.

Hilton will be hosting Clifton in a match that should go the way of the home side. Clifton will have gained both confidence and experience after their successful tour to England but it is unlikely that they will have the fire-power up front to outscore Hilton.

Neither St Charles nor visitors DHS have played as much hockey as the other schools in the province, but St Charles do have home ground advantage and they do not give up even when trailing. DHS have not had a good season and will probably be lacking in confidence.

Michaelhouse travel to Johannesburg where they play two matches, against St Johns and St Davids (tomorrow). The game against St Johns could be a close encounter, but as both these sides have been inconsisitent, much will then depend on their will power in the match.

Fixtures: Westville v Northwood; Maritzburg College v Glenwood; Hilton v Clifton; St Charles v DHS; St Johns v Michaelhouse; St Davids v Michaelhouse (Sunday).
