Clock stops: council fails to pay keeper

2010-06-09 00:00

TICK, tock … and then it stopped.

Those in the habit of looking up at the city hall clock may have noticed that it stopped ticking on Friday.

Well-placed sources contacted The Witness to say that the person tasked with looking after the clock pulled out last week because the municipality has failed to pay him for the past three months.

When The Witness contacted Msunduzi Mayor Mike Tarr early yesterday evening, he said he did not know about the clock, but had he been alerted earlier he would have attended to it.

“It will be fixed and going by [today],” he said.

Tarr contacted The Witness 10 minutes later to say he discovered that the payment invoices have been “sitting on someone’s desk” and the clock keeper has not been paid. “I have checked on it and it will be wound again [today].”
