Close call for KZN Inland women

2013-04-29 00:00

KZN Inland were involved in the closest of games on day one of the SA U21 Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament at Queensmead in Durban yesterday. Captain Lana Kruger’s girls beat Western Province Peninsula (Pens) 4-3 after the score was 2-2 at half time.

Coach Sihle Ntuli’s Inland team dominated the first quarter with an excellent penalty corner goal by Vicki Jonker after 16 minutes before the Pietermaritzburg girls made it 2-0 two minutes later thanks to a pinpoint cross from the right by Kirsty Camons that was deflected in superbly by Confidence Mashau. Pens responded with field goals from Ashleigh Ratcliffe and Rhoni Gericke.

Inland regained the lead five minutes after the restart through Jonker from field play, but Pens immediately levelled matters through Ruby Liebetrau. However, Inland found the energy to get back in front with Caitlyn Seegers scoring the winner.

In Pretoria, KZN Inland men beat Namibia 11-1 after leading 5-0 at half-time. Coach Fabian Gregory’s lads scored through hat-tricks by Damian Kimfley and Philip Smerdon. Mzamo Cele scored a brace and Zamo Ngubo, James Gearing and Dumi Mncwango got the rest.
