Close games likely this weekend

MOST of the top hockey schools in the province have been pitting themselves against schools from other provinces at festivals held over the Easter holidays. They now settle into the domestic season with some idea as to how they should fare against the local opposition.

Maritzburg College take on Glenwood. College have the top results after the early part of the season, as they have played 12 matches, winning 10, drawing one and losing one. The loss was against Grey College in Bloemfontein after they had beaten them a week earlier at the Glenwood Centenary Festival.

Glenwood has shown phenomenal progress in the past year and at this stage have played 10 matches, winning six, drawing three and losing just one game. Glenwood also beat Grey College at their festival and then lost against Pretoria BHS at the Nomads Festival at Grey College.

Hence this morning’s game should be evenly contested.

Michaelhouse will be hosting Kearsney in another tight game. Kearsney have played five, won three, lost one, drawn one.The loss was against Maritzburg College, and they drew with Grey College at Glenwood.

The home side has played nine games, winning six, drawing two and losing one, which was against Bishops. On the evidence of their performances against Grey College, St Albans and Westville, both sides appear to be evenly matched — and so the game at Michaelhouse could go either way.

Hilton, who will be hosting Westville, should have the better of the game, but looking at their results to date, the sides seem very evenly matched. Hilton has won two of their eight games with three losses and three draws. Westville has played seven matches, winning one, losing three and drawing three. The only side they have both played is KES. Hilton lost 0-4 and Westville drew 1-1.

St Charles host Northwood. Since Northwood did not play at one of the major festivals, little is known about their team. The game should go St Charles’ way, as they have played more hockey.

Fixtures (home side first): Glenwood vs Maritzburg College; Michaelhouse vs Kearsney; Hilton vs Westville; St Charles vs Northwood; Pinetown vs DHS.
