Closely matched school sides meet in Durban

2013-05-11 00:00

THE rugby season is heating up and with temperatures likely to be cooler, some good contests are on show today, with the top two games in Durban.

The two top-ranked KZN teams at present, Kearsney and Westville, meet at Westville. Bowdens is not a visitor-friendly ground, with the home supporters closer to the field than on most other grounds. This is likely to be Westville’s greatest advantage, although Kearsney appear the better on paper. The visitors should have the better in loose play, scrums and lineouts. In the backline, they are closely matched and it will likely be the side that handles better that will gain the advantage in this area.

In Durban, Glenwood take on Hilton. The home side have shown some good improvement since the Easter festival, with their backline and style of rugby getting many favourable reports. If the Hilton forwards can match the Glenwood physicality, the game will be close, as they both have pace in the backline. The only team they have both played are Michaelhouse and both gained comfortable wins.

Maritzburg College take on visitors Michaelhouse, who lost their last two matches against Hilton and Glenwood. College lost against Paul Roos at the Wildeklawer Festival and drew with Framesby. A close score could be the result, but if College play for the full 70 minutes, something they have not always done and with home-ground advantage, they should be the favourites.

DHS will be hosting Northwood. The home side will be low in confidence after some big losses. Northwood have also been on the losing side since Easter, but their matches have been more competitive and they should gain a win today.

Elsewhere, St Charles have a difficult assignment when they host St Albans.

Voortrekker have shown better form in their last few matches and today they travel to George Campbell. The result will give a better indication of where the local lads are in their progress.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Westville vs Kearsney; Glenwood vs Hilton; Maritzburg College vs Michaelhouse; DHS vs Northwood; St Charles vs St Albans; George Campbell vs Voortrekker; Clifton vs Weston; St Henrys vs Wartburg; Carter vs Howick; Hillcrest vs Kingsway; Thomas More vs Treverton; Kloof vs New Forest; Werda vs Gelofte.
