Club cricket resumes

2014-10-09 00:00

AFTER a break for Eid last weekend, the club cricket season resumes in and around Durban this weekend, with fixtures on Saturday and Sunday.

This time around, all eyes will be on the heavens in the hope of the sun breaking through and allowing matches to be played.

Starting on September 28, the season’s opening matches were all curtailed by rain, Uthungulu the only club to get a result and thus sitting on top of the log at this early stage.

The anticipated Durban derby between reigning Premier League champions Crusaders, who celebrate their half-century as a club this year, and Berea Rovers, allowed Rovers to bat and claim an early Crusaders wicket before the rain set in.

As a result, points were shared all around and this weekend will see sides keen to stamp their supremacy early, laying the foundation for the season ahead.

Six sides have a double header at the weekend, where bagging the four points offered for a win will be vital in settling into the points standings.

Saturday’s clashes involve Crusaders taking on Chatsworth United, Topham meeting Chatsworth Sporting and African Warriors welcoming DHS Rhythm.

Sunday is another full round of matches, with Pinetown, promoted after winning the Challenge League Stream 1 last season, travelling to Chatsworth Oval to meet Chatsworth United.

Uthungulu should continue their winning start against African Warriors, although Warriors have shown they can be competitive. If they get the run of the green early, whether batting or bowling, Uthungulu will have to work for the points.

Crusaders meet Delta,

another tough one in which to call a winner, while Rovers entertain Topham and DHS Ryhthm host Sporting.

Either way, it should be a weekend of hard, competitive club cricket, with players keen to spend time on the field, getting some cricket flowing through their veins while searching for the all important points awaiting the victors.
