Club rugby: Maritzburg Collegians just a step away from rugby final

2011-06-15 00:00

WHILE the KZN Premier Division club rugby match between Maritzburg Varsity and title challengers, Durban Collegians, was cancelled, the KZN capital’s other provincial league clubs enjoyed success.

“Our match against Durban Collegians has been postponed, as Varsity have a number of players writing exams and quite a few down with serious ’flu,” said Varsity head coach, Beans Bateman.

“We requested a postponement of the fixture and it was granted. There has not been a date set yet for the fixture.”

Runaway KZN First Division South log leaders, Maritzburg Collegians, thumped Hillcrest 46-17 at Woodburn Stadium over the weekend.

At Woodburn the veteran PMB Collegians scrumhalf Brendan Fourie continued his fairytale season, his trademark sniping breaks another outstanding feature of the contest. He was rewarded with another backline player of the match award.

In the forwards, flanker Warren Dixon, front ranker Dylan Pieterse, (with his bullocking runs reminiscent of last season’s captain, Charl Bezuidenhout) and the ever-present number eight, Justin Smith, stood out in the Maritzburg Collegians’ formidable pack. He also picked up the forward of the match award.

“One more win will give us the First Division South title and another crack at KZN First Division North winners, Vryheid,” said Collegians’ chairman, Tony Day.

The KZN First Division championship match is set for Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni on July 31. The winners of this will earn the right to challenge the KZN Premier Division wooden spoonists in a promotion/relegation match later this season.

In Kokstad, the PMB Elephants beat Kokstad 26-12 for another meritorious win.
