Coalition: Only a conference can undo NFP, ANC deal

2013-05-16 00:00

THE coalition agreement between the National Freedom Party and the ANC to co-govern 19 hung municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal could only be reviewed by a special conference, despite the problems being experienced, provincial NFP chairperson Vikizitha Mlotshwa said.

“[The memorandum of understanding] was taken to the national conference where a resolution was taken, so to reverse everything you must go back to [the] conference,” Mlotshwa told a press conference on Tuesday.

His sentiments were echoed by the party’s organiser, Stanley Dladla.

“If there is a need that we review the memorandum of understanding, it will have to go back to [the] national conference,” Dladla said.

They made the comments following the expulsion of two councillors who voted with the Inkatha Freedom Party and against the wishes of the NFP in council meetings of the Abaqulusi Local Municipality, where the NFP is in a coalition with the ANC.

The coalition has experienced similar problems in Nkandla, Imbabazane and Indaka municipalities, with some councillors seen to be sympathetic to their former party, the IFP, and not welcoming the alliance with the ANC.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said his party hoped that internal NFP issues would not affect the functioning of the councils they co-governed.
