Coast floods: R4 mln for new housing

2008-06-23 00:00

The KZN Housing Department has allocated R4 million to assist families made homeless by the south coast floods.

Department spokesman Lennox Mabaso said that since last week the KZN government, non-governmental organisations and municipalities have been working around the clock to bring relief to displaced people, handing out blankets and food and accommodating people in churches and halls.

“As part of the relief efforts, municipalities in the affected areas will be expected to identify a safe land where the flood victims will be located and assisted with emergency housing,” said Mabaso.

“A preliminary report will be presented before the provincial cabinet by the joint cluster of ministers on disaster management, which is being led by MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu,” he said.
