Coast: two drown and two near misses

2009-11-30 00:00

A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy drowned in a home pool and a man died at Pennington Beach at the weekend.

In unrelated incidents, a girl aged 10 and a woman nearly drowned and are recovering in hospital.

The boy was pulled from a pool in Umbilo. His family tried to resuscitate him before paramedics took up the battle on Friday afternoon.

Paramedics said the drowning at Pennington on Saturday happened when a man was pulled out to sea by a rip current. Other bathers pulled him to shore and administered CPR, but he could not be revived.

Later that evening, a woman was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition after a near drowning. It is alleged that several swimmers around her got into trouble and one of them clung to her, pushing her head beneath the water.

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old girl proved to be a fighter when she was revived after losing consciousness in another near drowning, at the Richards Bay Scuba Club yesterday morning. Her motionless body was spotted by the adults. They carried out CPR until paramedics arrived and took over.

In a boating accident in Margate on Friday, a 22-year-old holiday-maker aboard an inflated boat was seriously injured when they beached.
