Coastals fall to WP

2012-07-13 00:00

THE 20 teams in the two sections at the U16 IPT at Maritzburg College and the AB Jackson turf played their last round robin matches yesterday.

Coastals lost their first match against Western Province and Inland won their game against Northerns. Western Province were the only side at the tournament to win all five of their matches, which included Inland on the third day.

Coastals will be kicking themselves as they were all over WP, but the Cape side packed the circle with all 11 players and Coastals could not score. The early pressure was exerted by Coastals, and when WP did get a breakaway midway through the first half, a mistake in the defence saw Michael Otten (Fairmont) smack a reverse stick shot into the goal against the run of play. Thereafter Coastals did all the attacking, but despite dominating the possession found it impossible to get through the defence of Province.

In the second half the same pattern continued and they spent 90% of the time in the WP half.

From the six penalty corners awarded they were also unable to score so had to be content with a 0-1 loss and likely second place in the pool.

This position was dependant on the last match between Inland and Northerns. Coastals were almost assured of second as Inland would have had to score 11 goals to take second place because the Coastals’ goal difference was much superior.

They did win the game, but Northerns played well to prevent more than the two goals scored by Inland.

Inland went into a 2-0 lead, but Northerns pulled a goal back when Tiago da Serra (Pretoria BHS) slipped the ball into the open goal after an Inland mistake in the midfield, which resulted in a counterattack.

Inlands’ two goals were scored by Marc Knoble (St Charles) from a rebound off the Northerns goalie’s pads and then by Peabo Lembethe (M College).

The semi-finals this afternoon sees the team topping Pool A, Western Province, playing against the team that was second in pool B, Eastern Province. This will be played on Papes at College at 3.40 pm. The semi-final before is between KZN Coastals against the winners of Pool B, Southern Gauteng. KZN Inland will play Amathole for a position in the middle four. This match will be at 12.30 pm.

Other Section A results: S Gauteng 0 W Province B 0; E Province 4 E Gauteng 0; Amathole

3 Boland 3; S Free State 2 SWD 1
