Coffee sipping robbers plan hit

2010-12-13 00:00

A CAR stolen in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, was used during an armed robbery at the Asmall’s Camps Drift branch yesterday afternoon.

Five armed men fled the scene in a Hyundai Accent with approximately R10 000.

An eyewitness said that these men were at the shop a day before the robbery and bought a few items before settling down for coffee in the shop’s cafeteria.

“They must have noticed that the shop does not have adequate security so they took their chance. The shop only has three security guards who are just harmless as they do not carry guns or whips,” he said.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said that the incident took place around 2.50 pm when four armed robbers demanded cash from the security guard and the Asmall’s shop manager.

“These men then held the cashiers at gunpoint and emptied the tills. They fled the scene in a Hyundai Accent, heading towards Imbali. This getaway car was stolen earlier in Amanzimtoti.

“The car was spotted by the police and the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Moses Mabhida Road and Sutherland Road. The suspects fled through nearby houses and no money was found in the car. Police are busy conducting a thorough investigation.”

When asked for comment, Asmall’s management said that a statement will be issued today.
