Coin Security heist on N2

2008-05-29 00:00

Five armed robbers yesterday poured petrol on the road next to a Coin Security vehicle, threatening to set it alight with the guards inside if they did not hand over the money.

Police spokesman Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said the guards were jammed by a Ford Bantam bakkie, which made a dead stop in front of their vehicle on the N2 Freeway near Port Dunford Bridge, Empangeni.

“Three suspects alighted from the back of the bakkie and were joined by another two who appeared from the nearby bush. The suspects started firing at the Security vehicle.”

The robbers demanded that the occupants open up and when they did not, one of the suspects took two five-litre containers of petrol from the back of the Ford Bantam and poured it on the road near the Coin Security vehicle and threatened to burn the vehicle if they did not open the doors, said Mngomezulu.

The other two suspects went to the back of the security vehicle and one of the two guards who were inside opened the door. The robbers took an unknown number of bags containing money and two firearms. They then fled. No one was injured.
