College, Glenwood pull off good wins

2013-07-30 00:00

THE two school hockey matches on Saturday had good returns for the KZN sides against their Gauteng opponents.

The game between Maritzburg College and Pretoria Boys’ High (PBHS) reversed the result from last term and the improving Glenwood had a comprehensive win against Affies.

Maritzburg College 2 Pretoria BHS 1

College was looking for revenge after the 3-0 loss on the first Saturday of the second term up in Pretoria. Both sides were fired up, College for their last home game of the season and PBHS to win the double.

College played some great attacking hockey in the opening minutes of the game.

After squandering a few chances, they broke the deadlock with a reverse-stick shot from Tevin Kok in the seventh minute. This goal kicked the Boys’ High team into gear and within 10 minutes they levelled the score when some poor defensive work allowed a direct ball into the circle to be deflected into the back of the net by a diving forward.

The game was evenly contested from then on with some good defence by both teams and good saves by the goal keepers. The score remained at 1-1 at the break with neither side having conceded a penalty corner and much of the play taking place between the two circles.

College were awarded the first penalty corner (PC) in the 39th minute but it was parried away by the keeper. Shortly thereafter PBHS were awarded two PCs close together but the College defence prevented a goal. With seven minutes remaining, College were awarded a second penalty corner and this time captain Jorgen Wikström sent the slip flick into the back of the net to hand College a hard earned 2-1 victory.

Glenwood 5 Affies 2

Glenwood were not wanting a repeat of last year’s match when they went down despite having domination in the game. This time they made the domination count and scored five goals. The report from Glenwood was not received so no details can be given.
