College Rovers defeat old enemies

2013-05-28 00:00

THE Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division’s reigning champions, College Rovers, entrenched their position on top of the log with a hard-fought 26-17 victory over old enemies Durban Collegians on King’s Park 10 on Friday night.

Rovers, who led 11-6 at the break, have now opened a five-point lead on the log. This gives them some daylight after Durban Collegians had matched them step-for-step in the matches leading up to this crunch encounter that was fiercely contested from the first whistle.

Meanwhile, Sharks and Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis made a rare return to club rugby during Crusaders’ 24-10 win at Harlequins.

It was another weekend of disappointment for the UKZN Impi and Maritzburg Collegians.

The Impi suffered their fourth defeat in succession when they were beaten 20-13 by Varsity College at the Riverside Sports Club in Durban North. At least the Impi got a log point out of the game for finishing within seven points of the winners, but this is a difficult time for the students as many are writing exams and some had to sit for important exams on Saturday morning after playing a gruelling match on Friday night.

PMB Collegians made the long trek to Empangeni before tackling the Zululand Rhinos in a very important match.

After a long day at work, it is not the best way to prepare for such a key encounter but Collegians had no choice in that. With abrasive lock forward and captain Jean Vosloo out for the season with injury, livewire hooker Dylan Pieterse and playmaker Conal Levin also injured, Collegians faced an uphill battle.

The match was a cliff-hanger, not surprising since Collegians were just two log points above the Rhinos going into the 80 minutes.

In the end, the Zululanders shaded the red, black and white out with a 9-7 scoreline. Collegians’ talented halfback Tiaan Moore got the only try in what was a bruising struggle for supremacy.

The outcome means that the Rhinos move one point above Collegians on the log — and the battle to avoid the Premier Division wooden spoon only gets tougher for the Maritzburg lads.
