College alive with rugby, netball

2013-05-03 00:00

THE first day of the Wildeklawer Rugby and Netball Schools’ tournament was a huge success on the fields of Maritzburg College. The hosting of the festival was in celebration of College’s 150th anniversary

The games started with thick dew on the ground at 7:50 am. This prestigious sports festival is in its fifth year and each year invites the schools from the previous season that have caught the eye.

The rugby included 20 U19 teams and six in each of the U16, U15 and U14 age groups, which all played on the B and C fields. The girl’s netball involved 13 teams and matches were played on two courts in the newly constructed College indoor centre.

The temperature was perhaps too warm for rugby and some of the sides that played in the heat of the day did take some strain. There was good support from the spectators. As expected, the crowd swelled to take in the penultimate game when College played Paul Roos. There was some disappointment that College did not come back from their half-time deficit, but they did please their supporters and got the bashers flying with a spirited display in the second half.

The games were played in a good spirit with few incidents. There was one red card and two yellow cards, but on reviewing the red, it has been withdrawn as it was seen to be accidental. This of course did not help Diamantveld, who played most of the game with 14 men.

All the matches on Goldstones tomorrow will be televised on SuperSport, with the first match between the Sharks XV and Oakdale and the last match between Maritzburg College and Frames. The two matches on the B field are being delayed and the other six will be live broadcasts.

There are some mouth-watering contests as the fixtures have been altered slightly to have more competitive matches tomorrow and College can expect even bigger crowds.

The matches are due to start on Goldstones at 7.15 am tomorrow, with the Affies match against Paul Roos and Monument against Grey College being probably the two most competitive games.
