College dominate SA Junior canoe team

2009-06-16 00:00

OF the 12 paddlers making up the SA Junior and U23 Federation Sprint Team to the 57th Ruhr Regatta in Bochum Germany next weekend, six are either current pupuils at Maritzburg College or past pupils from the school.

The team will be racing over the Classic Olympic distances of 1 000 metres and 500 metres in K1 and K2 categories. U23’s Cam Schoeman and Stuart Waterworth, fresh from a ninth place in the Szeged World Cup 1 000 metre A final, will be racing both the 1 000 metres and 500 metres in the K2. Gregor Martin will be racing in the boys U18 K2s with a Gauteng partner and U16’s Blaine Berresford and Dewalt Hattingh will be racing in K1s. The team is managed by another College past pupil, Craig Mustard.

The Ruhr Regatta is regularly attended by South Africa’s younger paddlers as, unlike many of the other European regattas, it offers racing in U16, U18 and U23 age groups. This gives the paddlers an ideal opportunity to gain experience of international regattas ahead of the huge tensions and pressures of the World Championships.

The team leave today for Germany and race over the weekend of June 20 to June 22 returning to South Africa on June 23 in time for the SA Marathon Championships in Plettenberg Bay at the end of the month.
