College end hockey season on high note

2009-08-11 00:00

MARITZBURG College travelled down to Glenwood last Thursday for their last match of a very successful season. They had previously beaten Glenwood 6-0 at home. Midweek fixtures are never ideal for either team, but College was quickly into their stride as Andrew Manson scored an excellent field goal after just three minutes. Five minutes later, Matthew Guise-Brown put College 2-0 up with a flick just under the crossbar from a penalty corner. Two more field goals in the next three minutes, the first by Grant Glutz and then Dean Pengelley, after good build-ups by the midfield, put College 4-0 in front with just on 50 minutes still to be played.

After the initial shock, Glenwood held College at bay until the 20th minute, when Jaryd Mitchell scored a field goal and then Nicholas Berichon got a tap into the goal after some slick interpassing, which left competent KZN Coastals goalkeeper, Alex van der Merwe no chance. Manson scored the seventh goal in the 26th minute and then a lapse in concentration by the College back four allowed Srinath Sankari to score from the circle to pull one back for the home side just before the half-time whistle.

The 7-1 lead at the break was a just reward for some superb hockey by College. The second half saw a more disciplined approach by Glenwood and it took 12 minutes before College opened the second-half scoring.

Glutz scored his second field goal and then came the goal of the match. Three minutes later, SA Schools striker Pengelley picked up the ball in the circle and with a powerful reverse stick again gave Van der Merwe little chance, with the ball landing in the roof of the net. Two minutes later Glutz secured his hat trick with another field goal.

Glenwood had not given up and they forced a penalty corner, which Sankari converted, to make the score 2-10. College finished off the game and their season with a third goal by Pengelley, to leave College 11-2 winners.
