College favoured over Michaelhouse

2009-11-07 00:00

THE season is drawing to a close with a number of schools already finished for the year. Others will be finishing this week, with just a handful playing next Saturday.

The weather forecast looks favourable for all scheduled matches to take place.

Long-standing rivals DHS and Glenwood meet today on Dixons at Glenwood for their final game of the 2009 season.

Their match during the first term was rained off without a ball being bowled so both will be keen to end the year on a positive note. Glenwood has had the better year with DHS being very disappointing, but if they play to their undoubted potential they could surprise.

Maritzburg College, after losing their first game against Kearsney last Saturday, play against Michaelhouse, surprise winners against St Charles last week. This win will have given Michaelhouse some confidence after an ordinary season, but it is unlikely that they have the fire power to remove College cheaply. College has four players in the recently selected KZN Inland Under 19 team, while Michaelhouse has just the one player.

The top team in the province, Kearsney, play against visitors Hilton. If the senior players in the Hilton side play well, they will be competitive and could cause Kearsney a second embarrassing defeat. Kearsney have a much better balance in their side than Hilton and it unlikely that they will lose to Hilton again as they did in the first term. Kearsney has five players in the KZN Coastal Under 19 side, whereas there is just one Hilton player in the equivalent Inland side.

St Charles also rely on a few of their players and if they do not come off then St Charles does also struggle. It is not likely that Northwood will exploit the St Charles weaknesses and the visiting Durban side could again lose heavily, as they did in the first term.

Clifton are trying to make their way into the top teams in the province, but they have not yet managed to beat any of them. However, it will probably not be too long before they gain their first victory, but it is unlikely to be against Westville, who they play this weekend.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Glenwood vs DHS; Maritzburg College vs Michaelhouse; Kearsney vs Hilton; St Charles vs Northwood; Westville vs Clifton; Voortrekker vs Carter; Crawford LL vs Kloof; Port Natal vs George Campbell; Wembley vs Wartburg; Grosvenor vs St Henrys; Thomas More vs Westville II
