College put on a poor show for old boys

2009-05-28 00:00

WHAT was it — incompetence, bumbling over-eagerness, or nervousness of the occasion of the 2009 Old Boy’s Reunion?

Probably it was all of these at various stages, but it was very frustrating for an estimated 2 000 old boys in a good crowd of between 4 000 and 5 000, around a colourful Goldstones in this FNB Classic Clash match.

Maritzburg College contrived to lose the match, by an extremely low-scoring 3-0, against Westville, rather than Westville winning the game. It is not common in the modern game to have only three points scored in a match. When flyhalf Duncan Campbell put over a long 45-metre penalty in the fifth minute, no one would have thought that those would be the last points scored.

There was only one area in the game where Westville had the better of College and that was in the line-outs.

The College front row gave the home side the ascendancy in the scrums, the pressure of the tackles prevented the talented Westville backline from putting more than a few passes together and in both possession and territory, College were far ahead. In the battle for the loose ball it was fairly even.

Then why did College not win the match? The tackling from both teams was committed, and although there were attacks on the line, no one got really close to scoring a try.

The five penalties that went wide, including the last two from in front of the poles, gave Westville the victory on a plate. Some wild passes, slow service, poor handling, particularly those in try-scoring positions, and wrong decisions cost College dearly.

This was Westville’s third victory over College and the first win on Goldstones.

It was, however, a disappointment as an FNB Classic Match and some of the side shows, the parachutes, the letters MC formed by the College boy’s blazers at half-time and the sprinting of a first aid helper across the field, were perhaps the highlights of the day.
