College trash Harbhajan Singh Academy, Kearsney beat Hillcrest in T20 clash

2012-10-30 00:00

THE rain gods are definitely displeased, as yet again school cricket was all but rained out on Saturday. Only one match was played.

Many of the midweek T20 games were also not able to be played.

Northwood managed to get a game played and their ground was suitable on Saturday although a short shower delayed play early on and the game was reduced to 36 overs per innings. The other was a T20 match between Maritzburg College and a touring Harbhajan Singh Academy XI from India.

With very overcast conditions and the threat of rain later, College elected to take first knock. Captain Gareth Orr top scored for his side with 61 scored off just 36 balls. Shaun Wormington made an undefeated 27 off 14 balls to take the College total to 178 for four. He and Tim Guise-Brown (16*) added an unbeaten 42 for the fifth wicket.

As with the senior Indian players, the pacy wickets in South Africa are strange to them and the pace of Daryn Dupavillon and Josh Manley had the visitors on nine for two in the fourth over, each having taken a wicket.

There was a partial recovery, but the Indians could not keep to the required run rate and after their allotted 20 overs were just 75 for seven.

Harbhajan Singh Academy 75-7

Northwood vs Kearsney

Kearsney have been desperate for a game of cricket as they had not played since their tour of England during July.

The visitors were probably as surprised when Northwood said that they would be able to play.

With the start of play delayed, the overs were reduced to 36 a side.

Kearsney were asked to bat and they did look a little rusty.

Dale van der Merwe was particularly aggressive up front and Kearsney lost three early wickets to be 14 for three. James Lambert made 68 and Craig Kirsten scored an unbeaten 32, reaching 149 for seven.

Two sharp catches at gulley removed the two top batsmen early and thereafter it was Kearsney that applied the pressure and they were able to defend their total and bowl Northwood out in 35 overs, to win by 26 runs.

Walter Jordaan and Kirsten were the major destroyers takng seven wickets between them.

Kearsney 149-7 (Lambert 68, Kirsten 32*, Van der

Merwe 4/27)

Northwood 123 (Jordaaan 4/17, Kirsten 3/28)

Northwood vs Hillcrest (T20)

It was Van der Merwe, but this time with the bat, that enabled Northwood to reach 140 in their 20 overs.

The Northwood all-rounder scored 43, but Hillcrest bowlers did manage to bowl them out in the last over.

Hillcrest tried their best, but they were all out for 98 runs and this sees Northwood through to the KZN Coastal quarter-finals to be played in January.
