College victory: rain-interrupted night league game sees duckworth-lewis adjustments

2010-02-05 00:00

A GLORIOUS sight met the cricketers of the Presidents XI and Maritzburg College to see the Oval bathed in sunshine after some heavy rain earlier.

The good drainage at the ground allowed the match to get under way at the scheduled time and it appeared as if this would be the third match in the Sunfoil Night League to get a result.

Maritzburg College elected to bat and started steadily increasing the rate towards the end of their innings. Kewan Harries (43), Tyler Lortan (64) and Nicholas Hendrie (38) enabled College to reach 216 for seven.

A dark cloud built up quickly and play was suspended for about 20 minutes with a shower, not as heavy as expected. This reduced the game to 38 overs per innings. Lortan and Hendrie fell in successive balls, shortly after the resumption of play, both caught by Suhail Razack (Ladysmith) off the bowling of Marcel Frenzel (MCS).

In Frenzel’s next over, he again captured two wickets with successive balls, this time both bowled. The College total was was adjusted according to the Duckworth-Lewis tables, to a target of 223. Frenzel ended with five wickets for 42 in eight overs.

The President’s XI started slowly and when rain again started to fall, the players left the field after five overs with the combined side on 13 without loss. This time the rain was much heavier and when it stopped there were pools of water close to the table that had to be drained.

When the match continued, it required another 15 overs as the rules of the tournament stated that 20 overs must be bowled by the side batting second to constitute a game. The normal for a 40-over match would be that 15 overs are required.

The target was again adjusted and in the 20 overs, the Presidents XI would need 132 for a win. Andy Charters was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 22 in the allotted four overs. College recorded a 53-run win on the adjusted total and were relieved to get three points.

Scores in brief:

M College 216-7 (Harries 43, Lortan 64, Hendrie 38, Frenzel 5/42)

Presidents 78-6 (Charters 3/22)

College won by 53 runs on D/L method
