College win Sunfoil Night League final

2011-02-17 00:00

THE final of the second Sunfoil Schools’ Night league was won by Maritzburg College last night. This is the 10th time that College have won the night league since its inception in 1993.

College opted to bat and they started solidly, putting on 55 for the first wicket in just more than 12 overs between Kewan Harries and Stefan Ungerer. Harries ended on 43 in 75 balls. They eventually reached 199 for seven, but lost their way in the last five overs, losing four wickets in the run chase. Calvin Savage, after a quick 42 in 31 balls, and Greg Miller (28), went out an over apart after they had added 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Nicholas Pentz was the destroyer in the final overs taking three wickets with some accurate bowling.

Westville started in the worst possible way, losing a wicket off the second ball. Despite this, they were just behind College’s score of 82 total after 20 overs, but had lost three more wickets. Brendon Hartslief (44) and Simmonds (23) added 44 for the fifth wicket, but the target was just too far. In a fine attempt Westville reached 168, but it was Daryn Dupavillon who ensured that Westville did not reach the target, taking five wickets for 31 in 6.5 overs. Three of these were in his last two overs.

At the presentation at the end of the game, Dupavillon was named man of the match and bowler of the series, and Kewan Harries was named both ‘batsman of the series and player of the series.

Scores in brief:

M College 199-7 (Harries 43, Orr 27, Miller 28, Savage 42, Pentz 3/14, Simmonds 2/32)

Westville 168 (Hartslief 44, Dupavillon 5/31, Guise-Brown 2/44)

College won by 31 runs.
