College’s basketball season ends with a bang

2014-03-11 00:00

MARITZBURG College ended their basketball season with a busy week, fitting in matches against Carter, Alex and Michaelhouse.

First up was Carter where College reached their second successive century, having topped the mark the previous week against Glenwood.

Top scorers for College were Thoza Sineke with 24 points and Siphe Buthelezi with 17 points.

Against Alex, the players played outdoors, which took some adjusting, especially when it came to the heat factor.

Alex had the upper hand at the end of the first quarter but College bounced back from that point on, widening the gap and finishing four points shy of another century at the final whistle. Sineke again top scored with 17 points.

Playing at home against Michaelhouse (MHS), College started strongly, scoring five points in the opening 30 seconds. This set the tone for the match and, as many of the players were playing their final match for College, coach Arnold Moseya substituted the leavers and stayers throughout proceedings.

Leading 32-17 at the break, College extended their advantage in the third quarter to enjoy a 22-point lead at the final siren. Festivities on the stands were a noted feature of the game, with both sets of supporters attempting to outdo the other through chants, shouts and song. At half time, there was even a dance-off in what must be a first at a school basketball match.

This rounded off a successful term of basketball for College, especially the first team, whose success was attributed to Moseya, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of his team.
