Collegians and Toti clash to be a thriller

2011-04-01 00:00

THERE will be nothing remotely like easy log points on the table for First Division South clubs Pietermaritzburg Collegians and PMB Elephants tonight when they face Amanzimtoti and Durban Varsity respectively.

Toti were shocked at home by the equally ambitious Ballito Dolphins last time out and will be desperate to prove that the defeat was just a blip on the radar and get their title campaign back on track with a decisive victory over the red, black and whites.

Coach Rinier Bosman’s Collegians squad have enjoyed the perfect start to the season with three convincing wins over league newcomers Richards Bay, and then Ballito and the Elephants, but Toti on their home ground will be a true test of the early-season title favourites’ mettle.

Collegians will be boosted by the return from an Achilles tendon injury of captain Charl Bezuidenhout.

Blake Kyd should be over the facial injury he sustained in the extremely physical battle against Ballito, and with the outstanding loosehead prop alongside Bezuidenhout in the front row and backed by the likes of no-nonsense lock forward Vossie Vos and flanker Justin Smith, Collegians have just the personnel to win the all-important battle upfront.

It will give scrumhalf Brendon Fourie the time and space to set free his pacy backline, which should enable super-quick left wing Richard Hayworth to take his impressive try-scoring tally a step further.

At Woodburn Stadium, PMB Elephants will be looking for their first win of the season against Durban Varsity, but the Howard campus side are much improved from last season, as last Saturday’s narrow defeat to Hillcrest attests.

The KZN Rugby Union are soon to name the new sponsors of the Moor Cup Premier Division, the first round of which begins on Friday, April 15, with PMB Varsity at home to reigning champs College Rovers.
