Collegians in massive match against Rhinos at Woodburn

2013-07-26 00:00

THE Maritzburg Collegians first XV go into their most important match of the season when they take on Zululand Rhinos in the 14th and final round of the Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division.

Woodburn Rugby Stadium is the venue and tomorrow’s 3.30 pm kick-off will see a super-motivated Collegians line-up determined to get points out of the match.

Much is at stake. Collegians’ outstanding and absolutely crucial 24-13 win over Harlequins in Durban last weekend put the red-black-and-white lads from PMB one point ahead of Quins going into the last round.

Both Harlequins and Collegians are desperate to avoid last place and the unwanted promotion/relegation scenario, which is likely to be against a determined Amanzimtoti. Quins have to get a minimum two points off third-placed Crusaders tomorrow. If not, Collegians are safe, whatever their result against the Rhinos.

However, Collegians head coach Rinier Bosman wants to beat the Rhinos, so that the Saders/Quins outcome has no bearing on the PMB side’s fate.

Saders and Quins meet at 3 pm tomorrow on King’s Park 10, half an hour earlier than the Collegians/Rhinos clash, and you can be sure that communication between the PMB side’s management and those at the Durban match will be constant. Collegians will know what they have to do in the last 30 minutes of their match.

“The boys are up for the game and apart from the serious, long-term injuries we have had this season, the rest of the players are ready to go,” said Bosman.

There is a fair bit of niggle, too. Collegians had to scramble to Empangeni on a Friday night in the first round, never easy after a long day’s work. Yet they came close to winning. However, the Rhinos are a better side now, so Collegians will have to be on top of their game and show a willingness to grind it out if needs be.

UKZN Impi, assured of a commendable fifth place on the final log, meet fourth-placed Varsity College at 3 pm on King’s Park’s No. 2 field.

In the other Premier Division match, the 2013 champs College Rovers meet second-placed finishers Durban Collegians at 3.30 pm on KP3.
