Comedians invade PMB

2010-08-26 00:00

SOME of Durban’s finest comedians are preparing to invade Pietermaritzburg this weekend.

Accompanied by Martin Evans from Cape Town, who is doing a mini-comedy tour of KwaZulu- Natal, Durban School of Comedy founder Glen Bo and three members of the underground comedy movement Laughing Stock — Neil Green, Grayson Ibrahim and Kallies — will be performing in the ‘Cos I’m Coloured show at the Haythorne High School hall on Saturday at 7.30 pm.

Event headliner Evans, who has returned to South Africa after living in London for nearly 10 years, is the first South African to make it through to the semi-finals of Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? competition in the United Kingdom.

Established in 1988 So You Think You’re Funny? is the most prestigious of all the Edinburgh Festival Fringe stand-up comedy competitions. Past winners include Rhona Cameron, Lee Mack, Dylan Moran and Peter Kay, all of whom are now established comedians and tele- vision performers.

Speaking to The Witness, Green, who is a regular in the Bruin Ou’s comedy shows, said: “It’s a night to celebrate and poke fun at the coloured identity in equal measures and Woodlands provides the perfect backdrop to the night’s hilarity.

“Wherever you are from in the greater PMB area, it will be well worth the trip to catch some of the country’s rising comedic talents and genuine comedy celebrity sharing the stage in what will surely be one of the most memorable events on this year’s social calendar.”

Tickets for ‘Cos I’m Coloured are R80 at the door and from Haythorne High School until tomorrow. Alternatively phone 071 534 9187 or076 395 7894 or e-mail norules comedy@gmail to arrange for a more convenient ticket collection.

Evans is also performing in Durban at the sixth birthday party for Café Vacca Matta at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World tomorrow night. The venue has joined forces with the Punchline Comedy Club to host the comedy showcase, which features Green, Bo, Simmi Areff and Dusty Rich.

Tickets are R50 with meals priced from R35. Doors open at 7 pm for dinner, with the show starting at 8.30 pm.
