Comedy sci-fi

2008-07-11 00:00

THIS weekend sees Wall-E starting at CineCentre, Nu Metro and Ster Kinekor; All the Boys Love Mandy Lane at Ster Kinekor; Wanted at CineCentre; and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Married Life at Nu Metro.

Andrew Stanton directs Wall-E, which should be the pick of the weekend releases. It is an animated sci-fi film, set in the distant future where a lonely, small, waste-collecting robot trying to survive on a rubbish-clogged planet Earth inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will decide the fate of mankind. Reviews suggest that Pixar has scored again with this one. Voices include Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight and Jeff Garlin.

Wanted is directed by Russian director Timur Bekmambetov and stars James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie. It is a macho action thriller with McAvoy as a nerdy loser who is actually a master killer belonging to a secret cult. It takes Angelina Jolie to make him realise his destiny. Reviews suggest that the message is unpleasantly misogynistic.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is directed by Kunil Kholi and stars Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Khan plays a top industrialist who finds himself with four orphans to look after. So he needs a very special nanny. Shades of Mary Poppins.

Slasher fans are catered for this week with All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, directed by Jonathan Levine. A group of high schoolers invite Mandy Lane (Amber Heard), a good girl, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revellers begins to drop — something or someone nasty is on the loose.

Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, Pierce Brosnan and Rachel McAdams star in the Ira Sachs-directed Married Life. This is a stylish period piece, set in the late forties. A man, in love with a younger woman, decides to murder his wife to spare her the pain of rejection. It has a great cast, but reviewers have been muted in their enthusiasm.
