Committee continues peace efforts at hostel

2012-12-12 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL’S multi-party committee formed to deal with political intolerance in the province will continue with peace interventions at the kwaMashu Hostel.

This emerged in a meeting of the committee, government representatives, the South African Police Service and the Independent Electoral Commission. The gathering reflected on the recent by-election held in Ward 39 in kwaMashu, where canvassing was carried out in a tense and volatile situation. The by-election was as a result of the murder of an IFP councillor Themba Xulu.

The multi-party committee noted that the by-election last Wednesday went off smoothly. The meeting yesterday agreed on the need for the police to remain in the area until the situation is normalised.

KZN MEC for Transport, Safety and Security, Willies Mchunu who leads the multiparty committee said good work had been done by the three-aside committee made up of ANC, IFP and NFP leaders. He said this grouping of local leaders at the hostel was set up by the multiparty committee and met every day before the elections to assess the situation and provide political leadership on the ground.

The committee recommended that the three-aside continue with its work to ensure on-going dialogue and political tolerance.
