Commuters: increase in taxi fares on the way

2011-05-03 00:00

WITH the petrol price set to increase tomorrow, taxi commuters will feel the brunt of it as the Umgungundlovu Regional Taxi Council (URTC) is already preparing to increase the fares by May 30.

The chairperson of URTC, Boy Zondi, said taxi operators have discussed the fuel price increases and agreed to raise taxi fares.

“We are still going to meet as the leaders of 40 taxi associations to discuss the issue of adjustment of the taxi fares,” Zondi said.

He said taxi operators have been absorbing petrol price increases for the past three years without increasing the fares.

“We have reached a decision to increase the fares because our businesses are struggling, and unfortunately it is the passengers that will suffer the consequences,” said Zondi.
