Compelling play comes to St Anne’s

2008-01-24 00:00

Anyone who missed the excellent Gumbo at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival last year now has another chance to see the play. There will be two performances at 7.30 pm on January 30 and 31 at the St Anne’s College Theatre.

Gumbo is presented by From the Hip: Khulumakahle, was written by Rob Murray and Floss Adams, and directed by Tanya Surtees.

Created and performed by a company of deaf and hearing performers through a blend of clowning, haunting imagery, physical theatre and South African sign language, it is an entertaining modern fairy tale about finding one’s place in the world.

Tackling themes of acceptance and rejection, and as South Africa’s first full-length deaf and hearing integrated show, Gumbo is a poignant piece of theatre, combining a gentle love story, broad comedy and compelling action, often told through mime.

Words are not the main means of telling the story. Reviewing the show after last year’s Hilton Festival, Margaret von Klemperer wrote: “Many plays with more words have less impact”. Tickets are R50 (R40 concessions) and for more information, phone 033 343 3300.
