Comrades 2012: entry Changes, discounts and a new charity focus

2011-08-26 00:00

COMRADES Marathon hopefuls who have entered but have to pull out before race day will from next year be able to transfer their place to another qualified runner.

This was one of the changes announced by the Comrades Marathon Association when they launched the 2012 race yesterday.

Next year’s race will be run on June 3. Entries open at midnight on September 1 and close on Friday, November 30, or as soon as the cap of 18 000 entries is reached.

Another new feature is an “early bird” entry fee for South African runners who enter in the first month; they will pay R270 instead of the standard fee of R300.

CMA chairperson Peter Proctor said the race’s charity focus is being increased next year, with a special starting batch for 1 000 runners who raise R5 000 each for charities. They will be able to start near the front of the pack.

The theme of the race is “The Spirit of Giving, The Spirit of Caring, The Spirit of Winning! — That is The Spirit of Comrades!”.

A new charity, World Vision, has been added to the beneficiaries of the CMA’s Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive. The others are Starfish, Community Chest, The Sports Trust, Pink Drive and Wildlands Conservation Trust.

The prize money for the race will also increase, but the amount still needs to be approved by the CMA board.
