Comrades Marathon: Park drive to be closed

2011-05-18 00:00

PARK Drive through Alexandra Park towards Alan Paton Avenue will be closed from 8 am today until midnight on May 31 while preparations are made for the Comrades Marathon.

Park Drive is the road branching off from College Road into Alexandra Park and runs past the Oval cricket stadium.

It will be closed from the Princess Margaret Drive turn-off to Princess Elizabeth Drive.

Jeff Minnaar, of the Comrades Marathon Association, said they needed to close the road early to fix some parts in preparation for the marathon, which will end in the park.

“We needed to close the road because we needed to start building the ablution facilities such as the showers that will be built on the road,” he said.

The marathon will be run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on May 29.

He said motorists heading towards Maritzburg College and those heading towards Alan Paton Avenue can still drive through the park.

They will still be able to drive up Princess Margaret Drive and past the bowling club and come down behind Princess Elizabeth Drive, joining Prince Charles Road.

Minnaar said that although they are not expecting large volumes of traffic on these days, they will post two guards at both ends to help direct motorists.

“Due to the magnitude of this year’s Comrades Marathon, there was a need that we push back the finish line and hence we needed to close the road,” said Minnaar.
