Comrades Marathon: Rain or shine, preparations are well on track

2009-05-22 00:00

NOT even rain could stop workers from setting up the Comrades Marathon finish at Sahara Kingsmead Stadium, as preparations for the ultra-marathon reach fever pitch.

Immediately after the last IPL game was played in Durban on Wednesday night, hundreds of workers got down to work to set up for Sunday’s big race.

This year, the staging of IPL games at the stadium put a spanner in the works for the Comrades Marathon Association, who was left with only three days to complete the Comrades finish.

Work on the finish usually takes three weeks.

Race director Renee Jordaan said that work still proceeded, despite the heavy rain that lashed the grounds shortly after the cricket match.

By 9 pm, more than 300 people were on the field helping to set up the fencing, announcer’s tower and the medical tents. Sophisticated computer systems are also being installed.

She said that work on the tents was completed at 2 am yesterday morning.

“By eight this morning, we found that we are ahead of schedule . . . We should be finished by Saturday morning.”
