Comrades art competition to canvas donations for charity

2010-02-06 00:00

A NEW arts competition, organised as part of the celebrations for the 85th running of the Comrades Marathon, will help raise money for charity and provide artists from Pietermaritzburg and Durban with national and international exposure.

The competition, which is being hosted by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture, is open to professional artists (those who have had at least one solo exhibition), amateur artists and school pupils in grades 10 to 12.

Thirty works will be selected, from which five finalists will be chosen in each of the three categories. The winners of each category will receive R5 000.

Sian Theron, curator of the CMA Museum, said the top entries will be displayed at the Comrades Bonitas Expo from May 27-29. The three winning works will be sold by auction on May 28, with the proceeds being split 50-50 between the Amabeadibeadi charities and the artists.

All works submitted for the competition must reflect the heritage of the Comrades from its inception in 1921.

Entries must be submitted to Comrades House by April 30. For more information, phone 033 897 8650.
