Comrades entries close

COMRADES Marathon race director Johan van Staden says the annual ultra-marathon is attracting greater levels of interest from local and international runners.

Entries for the 2013 edition of the 90 km race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg closed yesterday when the cap of 18 000 entries was reached.

Van Staden lauded South African athletes for their unwavering commitment to the world’s oldest ultra-marathon.

“The enthusiasm and desire to run the Comrades Marathon has reached record levels, not only in South Africa, but across the globe.

“However, it is mainly thanks to the South African runner that we have managed to maintain our position as world leaders in road running.”

The 2013 Comrades Marathon (on June 1) is an Up-Run (Durban to Pietermaritzburg) and will be the 88th time the race is staged since Vic Clapham organised the first Comrades Marathon in 1921.
