Comrades: much earlier in 2009

2008-09-05 00:00

The Comrades Marathon will be run on May 24 next year, three weeks earlier than in recent years.

The date has historic significance because the runners will line up at exactly the same spot on exactly the same date as the very first Comrades.

That race was held in 1921 when 34 runners set off for the Durban City Hall at 7.10 am.

The closing date for entries has been brought forward to March 31, 2009, and will not be extended.

The Comrades date was changed to avoid the fixtures and celebrations around next year’s Confederations Cup tournament.

With many of the traditional qualifying races, including the Two Oceans Marathon, being held only after this date, the Comrades Marathon Association is initiating a system to allow runners to enter before qualifying. Then the runners have an additional four weeks until April 28 to submit proof of qualification.

The entry forms will be available in January.
