Comrades: talk of more doping busts denied

2012-08-04 00:00

RUMOURS of more Comrades runners testing positive for banned substances have proved unfounded.

This follows Thursday’s announcement that seventh-placed Lephetesang Adoro of Lesotho had joined this year’s “champion”, Ludwick Mamabolo, in testing positive for performance-enhancing additives.

Khaled Galant, CEO of the SA Institute for Drug Free Sport (Saids), said 20 athletes had samples taken and of these only Mamabolo and Adoro had failed the tests.

“Tests have been completed and no other athletes have been found to use any illegal substances to give them an advantage in the race,” he said.

Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) general manager Gary Boshoff and KZN Athletics president Sello Mokoena confirmed that no other athletes among the top 10 men and women had tested positive.

“If any other athlete had tested positive, we would have been advised of this by Saids. Although the athlete’s name would initially be withheld, we would be aware of an announcement once all tests were complete,” said Sello.
